...away at 6.30. The Newell crew led at the start, rowing more steadily, although the Weld was rowing a higher stroke. As the crews went under the bridge the Newell was slightly ahead, but on the other side, the Weld pulled up and slowly forged ahead. About a quarter of a mile from the finish the Weld spurted and led by a length, while the Newell seemed unable to make further effort. Near the line Boardman made a final effort but the crew failed to respond. The Weld finished a length and a half ahead. The time was 9 minutes...
