...Through his interest in jazz, Schuller met the pianist John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, and then proceeded to meet all of the jazz greats of the day, like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus. He also played french horn on the great Miles Davis/Gil Evans albums, Birth of the Cool (1950) and Porgy and Bess...
However, surprisingly, on their debut album, Wasting Time, Mest's derivitative punk-ska style works. Their music, despite a cookie-cutter resemblance to other punk-ska outfits such as Blink 182, still shares the same exuberance of a life preoccupied with drinking and chasing after girls. Thus, the quartet plays quick but ultimately very melodic songs about longing ("Richard Marxism"), about more longing ("Random Arrival") and finally about more longing, with a dash of self-destruction thrown in for good measure ("Lonely Days"). ...networks are doing their best to translate other foreign "reality" shows to American tastes: ABC has picked up Britain's Jailbreak (10 "prisoners" under 24-hr. surveillance try to escape for big money), and NBC has locked up Holland's Chains of Love (one person chained to a quartet of the opposite sex). But we found some gems they may have overlooked...
