...notion that homosexuality is a fate worse than damnation. But Silverstein's script, told in verse with occasional bursts of music, is rowdy and rousing and raunchily uproarious, especially in a song about a gala party where saints and sinners mingle ("Richard III is comparing his hump with Quasimodo's"). The sole performer, as both Markham and his demonic adversary, is Dennis Locorriere, erstwhile singer-songwriter of the pop group Dr. Hook. His energy is boundless, his timing flawless, his depravity seemingly bottomless in this bewitching romp...
...sojourn in this circle began every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:45 a.m., when Quasimodo climbed the bell tower of Memorial Church and rang the Chem 20 bell. Twenty minutes later, I passed though the entrance of the first circle--coincidentally the entrance to the Science Center--and spent an hour of my valuable time copying blurred illustrations that upon later examination looked like the drunken scribblings of a dyslexic orangutang. There is a pronounced effort to make the cast look as unappealing as possible, presumably to add a comic touch and to scoff convention. "Who does your wardrobe, Quasimodo?" Jason asks Phoebe in one of his lucid moments...
...accused of being a witch. In the gallows scene Lesley-Anne was forced to stand with a noose around her neck and her hands tied behind her back while she balanced atop a two-foot-high stool on a platform 15 feet above the ground. All this while Quasimodo, the hunchback bell ringer, played by Anthony Hopkins, 43, clumsily scrambled about trying to free her. "Anthony is no stunt man," says Lesley-Anne, "and the makeup job left him with just one eye open. I'm still having choking dreams...
