...attempted to work out ambitious mergers of Libya with Tunisia, Egypt and Syria. His present link with Syria is largely symbolic and may well collapse, as the others did, in recrimination. In 1973 Gaddafi ordered an Egyptian submarine, temporarily under his command in Libyan waters, to torpedo the Queen Elizabeth II, which was carrying hundreds of Jews from Southampton to Haifa to celebrate Israel's 25th anniversary. Sadat, who was then still on speaking terms with Gaddafi, countermanded the order. Over the past decade, Gaddafi has continually tried to get hold of an atom bomb?so far with no success...
Reading your article on Artist Edwin Landseer [Nov. 16] reminded me of the story about his famous painting The Monarch of the Glen. As a guest of Queen Victoria, Landseer went deerstalking with a gillie from Balmoral. After following a five-pointer stag for over four hours, they had it trapped in a corrie. Unpleasant side effects were limited to temporary dizziness or gastrointestinal upset. The Canadian team is now beginning a two-year study...

He had just climbed out of a river, covered with the little suckers. Doctors tend to be less squeamish. But even for them leeches have long been associated with archaic medical practices, like bloodletting to cure everything from gout to mental illness. Lately, however, the unlovable little creatures have been having a minor revival. At New York's Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center doctors are using them effectively to help save reattached...
Whatever its origin, the Christmas tree spread throughout Germany and was brought to America by Hessian troops during the Revolutionary War. But the tree did not gain popularity until the mid-1800's, when a picture of Queen Victoria's elaborate fir appeared in Godey's Lady's Book, the fashionable magazine...
