More than 40 people were killed and thousands left homeless as a wave of anti-immigrant violence swept through the shantytowns around Johannesburg. President Thabo Mbeki was eventually compelled to send troops to quell vengeful mobs that rampaged against migrants from neighboring nations, whom they blame for everything from a rash of robberies to taking away jobs in a nation racked by high unemployment. Despite astoundingly high rates of violent crime in South Africa (mob violence aside, some 52 people are murdered every 24 hours), many Zimbabweans in particular have poured into the country to escape their own nation...
...After nearly two weeks of silence, Augé and Rosnay sought to quell the controversy by releasing a statement defending the piece as a fusion of art and entertainment. "The film was never intended as a stigmatization of the banlieue, nor an incitation to violence, nor above all, as an underhanded way to deliver a racist message," they stated. From the beginning, they said, Stress was meant to be a "clip unairable on television" for a "track unairable on the radio," and they have "refused any television broadcast of the clip, so as to impose it on no one." ...close. Even the sight of U.S. military cargo planes landing in Rangoon failed to quell the frustration. The U.S.'s top commander in the Pacific offered to "put Burmese officials on our planes and ships" if they allowed U.S. forces to bring relief supplies into the country. But there's little chance a regime this insular and paranoid will let that happen. The trouble is, the Burmese lack the kinds of assets needed to deal with a calamity of this scale--and the longer Burma resists offers of help, the more likely it is that the disaster will degenerate beyond...

Activist Earl Ofari Hutchinson of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable called for black and Latino students join in a "Unity Day" against violence, saying L.A. school officials had failed for too long to act to quell tensions between the groups. "That failure is a prescription for continuing disaster," Hutchinson said...
...what's the harm in Americans athletes at least speaking up, if not speaking out? The International Olympic Committee, the United States Olympic Committee, and Olympic sponsors have all insisted that they won't quell free speech in the run-up to the Olympics. So if most American athletes are shying away from the issues, it either appears that these institutions are gagging them, or that they're not making at least an attempt to get informed. Either scenario is a shame. Why shouldn't the American team leave the "we're just athletes" excuse at home? Why not embrace...
