...There's a long line of video-game-to-movie transfers - Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Doom, Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, Hitman and DOA: Dead or Alive, not to mention about a quillion Japanese animes (Pokemon and its brethren) - and a seemingly infinite number of VG adaptations to come: film versions such game franchises as God of War, Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid, Lost Planet, Prince of Persia, EverQuest, Mass Effect, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the blessed Sims and, yikes, PacMan. ...snakes! We see the hat just before we see Indy; brown headwear is still in style in 1957. As for Indy's bullwhip, it's still faster and deadlier than a bad guy's gun. In the opening Area 51 scene, he uses it to disarm about a quillion Russkies, and to swing in Errol Flynn style from one warehoused beam to another. (Mutt will later show the same swinging derring-do on Peruvian jungle vines.) As for the snakes, there's just one, but indy is readier to die in quicksand than to use it as a lifeline...
...Year Old Virgin and Evan Almighty; he even lends a certain besieged menschiness to the role of the boss in The Office. But Hedges thinks the audience needs its subjective Carell-atives reinforced, so as Dan woos Marie with his sweet anecdotes we get about a quillion reaction shots of her smiling, twinkling, appreciating his very special Stevitude. It's one of many times the movie tells us what to feel, as if charm could be force-fed. Can't. The characters in a movie shouldn't be having more fun than he audience...
...violent moments in Oldboy (which was very loosely based on a Japanese manga), and even more in the first and third films in Park's so-called Vengeance trilogy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. But movie violence, as anyone who's seen Saw and its quillion imitators, is not unique to Asia. And if you want to argue that this violent film provoked this disturbed young man to commit this atrocity, you should be prepared to explain why all those who saw Oldboy, and The Matrix, and Saw, didn't do the same...
