Inside the judge's chambers, Kaczynski held firm that he didn't want to be called mentally ill at any point in the trial, and if that meant he needed new lawyers, so be it. The clash was ideological, not personal. The rapport between Kaczynski and defense attorneys Quin Denvir and Judy Clarke was clearly strong. Even at the height of their dispute, Kaczynski would confer with the two, often with a smile or a joking remark. He never recoiled when Clarke, a tall, thin woman who towers over him, patted his back or rested her arm on his chair...

"This case is the largest, the biggest, the most complex case ever filed in this district," federal defender Quin Denvir told U.S. District Court Judge Garland Burrell Jr. at a pretrial hearing last Friday. But prosecutors made it clear they had found what they were looking for--proof that they had the man responsible for killing three people and injuring 23 others in 16 bombings around the country. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Cleary...

Chickasaw Gardens--Where Lamar and Kay Quin live. In real life, the house belongs to the Dobbs', who own several car dealerships. Chickasaw Gardens has quiet, tree-lined streets, ever-present trees, lots of children, large and usually beautiful houses and a lake, complete with ducks. It also has an annoying entrance gate, a moderate but persistent crime problem and a wildly skewed racial balance (until a few years ago, all the 200 plus families in the Gardens were white). Yes, this is my neighborhood. It's got its ups and downs...
