Subsequently the Committee met with the Rev. Hanson and four of his supporters. This quintet aimed most of its artillery at the second book, The Emperor of ice-cream. Particular objection was voiced (1) to the protagonist's "irreverent" references to a statue and to his mother's religious values; (2) to the "gutter language" and reference to various anatomical organs: and (3) to two admittedly unconsummated sexual scenes that, it was felt, "could not help but sexually arouse children and adults alike...
Protection can also mean death for informers. Richard Cain, once chief investigator for the Cook County, Ill., sheriff's office, gave lie-detector tests to a quintet of bank robbery suspects. Cain, now in prison, was not after the guilty man but in search of the FBI informant among the five. The tipster, Guy Mendolia Jr., was subsequently murdered...
...Four-Gates City, is something of a scoreboard on which the hits and misses of the second half of the twentieth century have been recorded. That that score is most often a losing one should surprise no one. Furthermore the group slowed down perceptibly toward the end of the movement, as much as six to twelve beats a second. Then, as if the Schumann had not sufficiently apprized the audience of a certain...
After an interminable intermission came Dvorak's Quintet for Piano and Strings in A Major, opus 81. Czechoslovakia may be under someone's thumb but Czech music is very much alive. This gorgeous piece was very well played. The cellist distinguished himself with a beautiful, full, resonant opening and the ensemble played with much more rhythmic unity and dynamic cohesion. Walter Trampler was superb throughout the Dvorak. There was an evident feeling for the ebb and flow of the beautiful melodies, lines which sing and soar over the often complex texture of this magnificent quintet. The new quality in their...
