Lyndon Johnson called it a "damned little pissant country." Even less flattering language was used by many of the half a million Americans in uniform who made their way through, around and above it: trooping across swamps, languishing in Quonset huts, piloting PT boats, spacing out on drugs, shelling from offshore, amputating limbs, bombing from B-52s, killing, maiming -- and getting maimed and killed. How all that ended is well known. Bill Clinton, a college dissenter during the height of hostilities in Vietnam, showed last week that he could put a coda to that sad history and make a fresh...

...money is for a new building to replace the 50-year-old Quonset hut in which the Parliament of the Solomon Islands has been meeting. Solarz says the building will give "tangible support for democracy in that part of the world." A noble purpose, but why was the appropriation tucked into a spending bill titled "Procurement for the United States Navy"? Solarz's explanation: he considers the new building to be a monument to the American G.I.s who perished in the World War II battle of Guadalcanal...

...some of the deported bears inevitably show up in Churchill again, having trekked back at speeds up to 30 miles a day. Next year Churchill plans a different tactic: obstreperous bears will simply be locked up for a few weeks in sturdy concrete-and-steel cages inside an abandoned Quonset hut. During their brief captivity, they will need no care other than some watering. Finally, when Hudson Bay starts freezing and the bears begin to think passionately about chasing seals on the ice, they can be safely released. -By Frederic Golden. Reported by Ed Ogle/Churchill

...joke that there were not enough memorabilia from Ford's brief 30 months in office to hang on four walls. That is hardly a problem. The political odyssey of the Eagle Scout from Grand Rapids is represented by full-size replicas of the Oval Office and the Quonset hut from which he ran his first, successful, campaign for Congress in 1948. Among the treasures: Ford's typed pardon of Predecessor Richard Nixon, an aide's memo suggesting that he not keep Alexander Haig as Chief of Staff, and a copy of the Declaration of Independence made...
