...blunt, even coarse speech of Masha, but she has not sufficiently plumbed the poetic sensitivity that lies beneath. It is not a bad performance; it just leaves a great deal yet to be explored. The problem of Masha's and Vershinin's drum-roll exchanges ("Tram-tam-tam ... tra-ra-ra"), the shortest mutual love scene ever written for the stage, has been effectively solved by substituting complementary phrases from the aria "All men should once with love grow tender" in Act II of Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin...
Some supplies had been tossed overboard, and heavy waves were breaking over the low-lying stern. The reports from Ra, the 45-by 15-ft. reed boat with which Thor Heyerdahl hopes to prove that ancient Egyptians may have planted their culture in the New World, sounded a good deal less optimistic than they did during the first stages of his two-month voyage. The Norwegian adventurer and his six-man crew reported their position in the Atlantic as 1,000 miles east of Martinique and still on schedule, which calls for a landfall somewhere along the coast of Central...
...ordered to remember their serial designation since 1918. The first officer to get one, General John J. Pershing, had no trouble with his; it was 01. The drab, nine-digit Social Security number will lack the flavor of the Army serial number with its prefixes of US denoting draftee, RA for volunteer and O for officer. By 1972, the Air Force, Navy and Marines will have switched over, too. Efficiency must be served; but it just won't be the same in the war movies when John Wayne refuses to give the enemy any more than his name, rank...
Then you were lifted out of the smoke and grime--and memories better left in the ashtray--and propelled into the sub-ether by Sun Ra and the Space Arkestra. If you grew up devouring Heinlein, Asimov, del Rev, Sturgeon, Bradbury and all the rest, you can't help resenting Sun Ra a little. You think to yourself that this guy just said to himself, "Outer space, yeah, that's what's happening; I think I'll make some outer space music." The lyrics, when they occur and when you can make them out, are so simple and naive that...
After Sun Ra, the program returned to more conventional jazz. Phil Woods' European Rhythm Machine seems to be the frame for his alto virtuosity that he has been looking for. Woods by no means carries the group, as several bass, piano, and drum solos demonstrated. Bassist Eddie Young of Young-Holt Unlimited has a good time on stage, too--so did we. The Bill Evans group by itself is a good jazz combo; it becomes great when Jeremy Steig walks on stage to add his lyrical flute. And the guitar of Kenny Burrell was--as it always has been--very...
