...general election. Netanyahu built his reputation on polished speechmaking and free-market economics in a country where neither had ever been overpopular. But Netanyahu also came across as a demagogue who did not speak out when his supporters circulated a poster portraying then Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in a Nazi SS uniform. ...Oslo peace process began eight years ago. Where was Abdullah during the prime ministerships of Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres? And, most crucially, where was Abdullah just 19 months ago, when the most dovish leader in Israel's history, Ehud Barak, offered an astonishingly generous peace at Camp David, and the Saudis, begged by President Clinton to weigh in with Arafat on the side of peace, did nothing of the sort...

He saw Rabin as a bearer of hope for Israel’s future, but then saw him die only meters from his feet. At a memorial service for Rabin, Shimon Peres said, “We have lost a leader but gained a generation.” That generation is Geffen’s generation, and he is its leader, its symbol and its hope for the future. Geffen was known for years...
