Davis: I think that one of the wonderful things about this picture is that recently I have objected to certain pictures that have dealt with the issue of voodoo, [notably] Angel Heart, which I felt was racist, both subliminally and explicitly. This was a film where every black person was shown to be barefoot, illiterate, with the exception of Lisa Bonet, who was shown to be a Valley Girl. But on the most dangerous level, a really nefarious suggestion was made that voodoo was somehow satanic...
...Walked with A Zombie and Zombies on Broadway. I think what [Serpent] attempts to do is give a positive portrayal of a culture at the thrust of change. The whole point of The Serpent and the Rainbow is to take a phenomenon which has been used in an explicitly racist way to denigrate an entire people and turn it on its head and hopefully show something good...
...notion that systematic efforts to improve the prowess of slaves by selective breeding have something to do with black athletic achievements is one of the most persistent and pernicious myths in America's overflowing collection of racist ideas. Historians as diverse as Ulrich B. Phillips, a staunch defender of the Confederacy, and Eugene Genovese, a Marxist, have convincingly shown that there was no widespread deliberate mating of slaves. This preposterous theory has nevertheless wormed its way into the collective consciousness through such classic works of pulp fiction as Mandingo. It is probably no coincidence that Kyle Onstott, creator of that...
Clark Reid Martell, 28, of the Chicago Area Skin Heads, is a longtime racist recycled as a skinhead. He describes himself as a "born-again Nazi" converted by reading Hitler's Mein Kampf. He has a history of mental problems and scrapes with the law. Nine years ago, Martell joined the National Socialist People's Party but quit "because they didn't have any women members, and women are vital for ensuring survival of the white race." Many Chicago skinheads, however, despise Martell's neo-Nazi group. "They're a bunch of loonies who give the rest of us skinheads...
Some officials are concerned that neo-Nazi types could take over the movement. In California there is little question that skinheads have ties with established racist groups. Tom Metzger, a former Klan leader who now heads the White Aryan Resistance, tries to recruit among skinheads. His son John Metzger teaches skinheads how to organize. Says the younger Metzger: "It's not a fad. It's a movement and a reaction against what's going on." Maybe. But more than anything else, the skinheads are a frightening, pathetic reminder that the U.S. has not solved its racial problems -- and that...
