...intent on showing the constancy of human nature, on proving that people "back then" were "just like you and me." Emily and Cambridge are indeed recognizable human characters, but they remain largely locked in the ideologies of their time. Emily considers herself a liberal even as she casually spews racist rhetoric; the proud slave Cambridge despises his African birthplace and views his own unconverted wife as a degenerate. Phillips' almost brutal insistence on historical accuracy renders these characters at once alien and sympathetic. It is this combination which makes Cambridge so disturbing and powerful...

What does have racist overtones is the suggestion that ethnic minorities grouping together is a bad thing in a way that, say, Feppies gathering in the Hasty Pudding is it. I disagree with Zaheer R. Ali '94 on many sings but I agree with his comments last week in the Crimson: "I do think in general in society there is a fear anytime Black people or so-called minority people or people of color are gathering together...

...didn't surprise me entirely though. In Madrid someone had taken the far-right Falangist party on dozens of building Graffiti's proclaiming "SKIN HEADS" and "KKK" occupied conspicuous places in subway stations. I'd seen racist rhetoric in the T and on down town buildings in Boston, but never to much as in Madrid...
