...future of Zimbabwe (Muzorewa's government has dropped the "Rhodesia" part) are mired in troubles. Admittedly, the conference got off to a shaky start; just before it got underway, the Salisbury government launched a "pre-emptive" strike against Mugabe's troops in Mozambique, blowing up fuel dumps and radar stations and killing 300. When the Salisbury representatives arrived in London, the Front delegates responded by branding Muzorewa and his associates "criminals" and refusing to shake hands or take tea with them. In return, Muzorewa declared that he would protect his people from "wanton dictators in the making" such as Nkomo...

...Zimbabwe Rhodesian commandos for the first time seriously battled Mozambique's supporting army. A communiqué issued in Salisbury boasted that the strike forces had suffered only 13 fatalities while killing 300 ZANU fighters and Mozambican troops. Out in the Midwest, where soft-spoken graduate students plant hybrid crops and try to improve harvest yields, big brother is the Department of Agriculture. And here at Harvard, where the lion's share of federal funds is funnelled into medical research, people report to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare...

Part of the problem stems from the people Lamont seems to have talked to, or enjoyed talking to, or remembered talking to. This man has radar for the asshole and sonar for the emotional cripple. Consider this quote from a Harvard sophomore: "Taking on a girl is like taking on a fifth course." Or this passage...

...tests compare the two models in such categories as navigation, targeting and range. Even more crucial is the ability to survive projected Soviet countermeasures. Explained William Perry, chief of Pentagon Research and Engineering: "We will put these missiles on our radar measurement range and make very detailed measurements of their radar cross sections. The data will be fed into a computer for simulations that predict what kind of performance we will get against different sorts of air defenses...
