For instance, minutes before Corder, 38, smashed onto the lawn and skidded into the White House early Monday, radar at nearby National Airport reportedly detected the plane. Yet, officials did not notify Secret Service agents who guard the mansion. Federal investigators are probing airport records to learn why.A MATHIAS RUST WANNABE? So why'd Frank Corder do it? ...board of Air Force officers recommended that members of the AWACS radar plane involved in last April's shooting down of two U.S. Army helicopters over Iraq be court-martialed for dereliction of duty. A Defense Department study found that the AWACS crew failed to warn U.S. fighter pilots that the helicopters were American Black Hawks, not Iraqi aircraft. ...Pentagon says "multiple human error" caused the friendly-fire downing of two U.S. helicopters after American AWACS jets mistook them for Iraqi choppers April 14. The Defense Department acknowledged that two F-15pilots were given the go-ahead to attack by controllers aboard an AWACS radar plane, even though air-control personnel were apparently aware the helicopters were not hostile. The pilots, both unidentified, will also be held partly responsible for not following guidelines and could face courts-martial. The accident killed 26 people -- 15 American military officers, the remainder from Britain, Turkey and France.parpar
