With a cast that donated their services and worked in perfect harmony, Shaw's comedy (of a radiant woman fought over by her stuffy parson of a husband and her mooning poet of a suitor) had an acquired warmth as well as a residual wit. In the title role which she first played in New York in 1924 and again in 1937, Katharine Cornell was this time much more human, much less conscious of her own radiance. Raymond Massey and Dudley Digges made Candida's sermonizing husband understandable, her scoundrelly father amusing. As the angular Prossy, Mildred Natwick...
...Easter fashions of 3478 B. C., and a brilliant red tunic. I termed my group the Red soldiers. Harry was a soldier in what I called the Rainbow Division, evidently founded by the color-loving Joseph during his stay with the Pharaohs. His tunic was a thing of radiant beauty if viewed from after, and his helmet shimmered in the African glare of the kleig lights. Bung was a nobody, a gray sort of individual with no color at all in his makeup. We sneered at him as a useless character, but he was to get his revenge...
...perpetrating new blunders on its children. But the gentle Tomlinson mind is encased in a hard head. He cannot quite rid himself of a pessimism that comes from knowing too much human history -an uneasy suspicion that when the dust has subsided, the groans have died away and radiant future has dimmed into present reality, the same old team will be found hauling the same wagon up the same hill. Only the faces on the driver's seat will have changed...
...face of Paris, so ageless and radiant in the years of freedom, is that of a gnarled and brooding old lady under the Nazis. The city was in no mood for a facelifting last week, but it had started to get one. The Germans were tearing down buildings in St. Germain des Pres, St. Gervais, Le Marais, the Palais Royal and the Halles (central markets). Except St. Germain, all these quarters belong to the old inner Paris, walled and fortified at the end of the 12th Century by Philippe Auguste, the powerful king who conquered Normandy and pushed his authority...
Although it is as dramatically incoherent as life itself, How Green is a radiant idyll of the dignity and charm of honest, simple working people. Well acted by a competent, unstarred cast, the picture is a credit to Director Ford, who is himself a big, rumpled, modest Celt (Irish) with a tidy mind, rock-ribbed integrity and a talent for turning out superb pictures (The Informer, Arrowsmith, Grapes of Wrath, Stagecoach). It is also his last picture-for the present. He is now on active duty with the U.S. Navy...
