...with the favorite theory of many top movie writers that nothing is quite so worth studying as the workings of their own industry are the corollaries that all these folk, with their immense fortunes, are just as miserable as the next fellow and that everyone within a fifty mile radius of Grauman's Chinese is awfully lonely behind the facade of glamor and sophistication. Perhaps these doctrines are healthy sops for those who go whole days without being asked for an autograph, but they are rather boring, especially when thrown into an already crowded agenda...
Distant Talker. American Telephone & Telegraph has started installing a "distant talking" telephone that picks up conversations within a radius of 5 ft. from the phone, thus permitting several persons to take part in a telephone conference. The set, which includes a microphone and loudspeaker, looks like a conventional phone, can be used by switching on a volume control switch. Price: $6 a month more than standard phones...
Unnatural Laws. The things that science deals with, said Gold, range in size from electrons (radius 10 -13 cm) to the universe itself (radius 10 27 cm). Man, the earth and the solar system lie midway between the two extremes, and the laws that govern them have become so familiar that any deviation seems wrong. But gravitation, one ruling common-sense force, is ignored by subatomic particles, which are attracted to one another by enormously strong forces effective only at very short distances. To explain events in the "microphysical" world, scientists need the "unnatural" rules of quantum theory...
Already the laboratory is probably obsolete. If a 5-megaton H-bomb like the one detonated in "Operation Ivy" (TIME, April 12) were aimed at the White House, experts calculate that the laboratory would lie within the "heavy damage" radius (three to seven miles); and the expendable south annex would be shattered. If a much larger H-bomb were dropped, the monolith's chances of survival would be slim indeed...
...Eden as their enemy and the old imperialist Prime Minister as their secret friend. Had he not thundered that he would not preside at the liquidation of the Empire? Churchill sat back while his War Secretary, Antony Head, explained on a map why the H-bomb's destructive radius would make the base untenable in a major war. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rab Butler then got up to say that he was not prepared to continue spending ?50 million yearly to maintain the canal base as an imperial monument...
