DAVID HAYES-Willard, 29 East 72nd. A raft of first-rate sculpture crowds the galleries this week; at least 13 shows are worth a prolonged look.* David Hayes's is one. In his second New York exhibition, he proves convincingly that, at 33, he belongs in the top rank of important young sculptors. Hayes, an American, has a studio outside Paris, where he hammers and welds forged steel into mat-black shapes of brute strength. His works are small but weighty, simple but bursting with power.
