Kissinger failed in one effort in the Middle East. He had wanted to be airborne when the treaty was signed at Kilometer 101 so that he would not be physically in either country and open to charges of favoritism (like the raft in midstream at Tilsit?). But a delay in the signing made it impossible; he was with Sadat. Successful or not, it was the kind of personal touch that has helped Henry Kissinger to stand out in these dark times...
After nine days they had to abandon the raft and squeeze aboard Lucette's 9-ft. fiber-glass dinghy. Using a makeshift sail and guided by stars, the dangerously overloaded craft headed north across the equator, where Robertson hoped to intercept the shipping lanes to Panama...

Charlie mediates between him and Michael, a petty crook full of ambition but lacking Charlie's family connections. He mimics George Raft, and is sulky and dangerous when he thinks he's being crossed. Charlie appears to have some compassion for both, just as he appears to have some understanding of his girlfriend's (Teresa, the film's only unconvincing portrait) epilepsy. Associating with these people hurts Charlie's "career", because he has to stay in good with Uncle and the traditional ideal of "honorable men." On the surface, then, he stands out as heroic...
