Giamatti is flattered. "But I don't buy it," he says. In Hollywood face is fate, and with thinning hair, crooked teeth and no chin, Giamatti knows that his mug will almost always be cast in the service of actors with cheekbones. Unlike some of his rage-filled characters, he carries no visible resentment about that. Sitting in a café in Prague (where he is shooting The Illusionist, supporting Edward Norton and Jessica Biel), Giamatti announces, "You are absolutely free to describe me as a turtle or something. Seriously. When you profile someone, there has to be a narrative...
...Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem to prevent them being turned over to the Palestinians in future peace talks. Ateret Cohanim officials deny they have leased the buildings, but reports of a deal were enough to provoke scrutiny of the Patriarchate's finances by the Greek government as well as nationalist rage from Palestinians. The Patriarchate is no stranger to controversial land deals. It owns about 4,047 hectares in Israel, including the land on which a number of Israeli neighborhoods of Jerusalem are built. That makes it the country's largest landowner, apart from institutions linked to the state. A high...
Bloggers are all the rage, but some tipping point of self-absorption may have been reached with BLOGEBRITY, a new site toasting the blogosphere's in crowd. The site's two twentysomething founders have created an A list of blogging stars (like WONKETTE'S Ana Marie Cox and Jason Kottke of KOTTKE.ORG), followed by hundreds of B and C listers. A post later lamented that blogging has lost its hip factor, but Blogebrity's founders are just getting going. Next up: plans for a print magazine and TV program featuring inside dish on bloggers. The A listers, anyway...
...West European countries felt the need to reproduce their own versions of the U.S.'s tech-heavy NASDAQ exchange. After a few lackluster years, some, like Germany's Neuer Markt, fell out of favor and the survivors are lightly traded. More recently, market mergers have been all the rage - witness the so-far fruitless attempts by pan-European Euronext and Deutsche Börse to take over the London Stock Exchange (LSE). Now a new craze seems to be catching on as quickly as the latest mobile ringtone: small-cap markets. Euronext last week launched Alternext, its junior, Paris-based...
Perhaps inevitably, such frenetic activity, combined with rising concerns about health and fitness, has led to another trend: camps for wellness. Tina Krinsky likes to think her company kicked off the rage four years ago when it launched a partnership with the upscale spa Canyon Ranch on the campus of Bryn Mawr College ($1,445 a week) in Bryn Mawr, Pa. She asserts that even though the male and female campers have the option of the occasional pedicure or facial, they spend the majority of their time exercising, working with personal trainers, learning about proper nutrition and getting serene through...
