...Marsh Clark discovered that food is so scarce that even Khmer Rouge soldiers are going hungry. ''We crossed a narrow stream that marks the border by walking across a narrow log bridge,'' reported Clark. ''Then we moved cautiously into the village of Ban Rai Kluay, where 5,800 soldiers and civilians once camped. We found only 25 people. Most of them were soldiers too ill to move across the border into Thailand. Their situation underscores the sad state of Pol Pot's army, which in the area we visited, at least, is reduced...

...captured Moro and a handbill warning that he would be subjected to a "people's trial." The typewritten flyer, emblazoned with the awkward five-pointed Red Brigades star, was sent mysteriously to Rome's daily Il Messaggero and left in a phone booth near the RAI state-run TV headquarters. It did not otherwise state any specific demands for Moro's release, but said further communiques would follow. Nonetheless, there was a growing belief that foreign extremists, probably Germans, had helped plan Moro's abduction. Noting the similarities to the kidnaping last September of Industrialist Hanns...

Wagner, Der Ring des Nibelungen (assorted soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of the RAI-Radiotelevisione Italiana, Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting; Seraphim, 19 LPs, $53.98). With Beethoven and Brahms, Furtwängler could be infuriatingly eccentric. When he was conducting Wagner, though, his stately, expansive, analytic style produced performances that were ingeniously congruent with the composer's convoluted purpose. Drawn from a 1953 series of radio broadcasts from Rome in mono sound that ranges from only dim to adequate, this is a Ring that every Wagnerian will at least want to hear, and probably own as a low-priced...

...trying to wrestle this enigma onto the TV screen, the CBS series-produced by RAI, the Italian national television company that aired it in Italy last fall -never resolves the hard choice between truth and drama. This week's episode opened with the death of Leonardo in the arms of France's King Francis I, the patron of the artist's declining years. Creaky and inspirational, the scene at least has a style that might grow on a sympathetic viewer. Alas, hardly has Leonardo expired when a young "guide" in a modern business suit comes on camera...

Needless Delay. Still, the attitude of Mai pen rai persists, and it is not confined to businessmen. In June, Conoco Oil sank a test well in the Gulf of Siam to see if reports of oil sources there were accurate. A discovery could help revive the Thai economy, but the government's cumbersome bureaucracy barely seems interested. It has delayed interminably in setting regulations for offshore drilling, and other oil companies are unwilling to commit capital without them. As a result, portable oil rigs, which were destined earlier for Thai offshore exploration, have now been moved to other potential...
