...BLOODY, BEAUTIFUL The shimmering landscapes of Riven. The blood-drenched corridors of Quake II. The eye-popping charms of Tomb Raider II's Lara Croft. Computer-gaming aficionados have never had so many titles to choose from--or so many megabytes to wade through (Riven alone fills five CD-ROMS). But impressive and sophisticated as the software has become, the industry still has a way to go. Pretty pictures don't necessarily mean great game play, nor does offering ever more destructive weaponry advance the cause of civilization. Sequels of last year's hits are nice, but our fondest hope...
There are no dominant teams in the NFL this year, just hot ones. And every strictly-for-entertainment league watcher loves heat. Witness the increasingly bloated bandwagon on Kansas City simply because the team had a couple of good Sundays in Arrowhead. After a 30-0 pounding of the Raiders coupled with a Broncos loss to the Steelers, NFL pundits are rumbling that the team featuring 107-year running back Marcus Allen, who was a Raider on the last AFC team to win the Super Bowl back when Chelsea was a wee lass, could go all the way. Which leads...
DIED. SIR JAMES GOLDSMITH, 64, billionaire financier; of a heart attack after a long battle with cancer; at his villa near Malaga, Spain. Goldsmith made his nut with pharmaceuticals and groceries and parlayed it into a fortune as a corporate raider in the '80s, acquiring high-profile targets. A legendary gambler, his business motto was "If you can see a bandwagon, it's too late to get on it." Late in life he started one of his own, founding Britain's Referendum Party, which opposed the European common currency. His warm and very extended family included his third wife...
...only has TWA survived, but the carrier once piloted by mogul Howard Hughes and later by corporate raider Carl Icahn has been enjoying a financial turnaround. Just hours before Flight 800 went down, TWA reported a $25.3 million profit for the second quarter, a fivefold gain over the same period a year ago. And with passenger traffic growing, and its $300 million cash stockpile rising, TWA has been planning to add as many as 40 Boeing 757s and 15 McDonnell Douglas MD80s to modernize the U.S. industry's oldest fleet (average age: nearly 20 years). The airline canceled a party...
Actually, the word kabaddi is derived from a Hindi word that means "holding breath"--the point of the chant being that the raider has to accomplish his mission in one breath. I learned that only last month from an article by an English writer named John Hargreaves in Hemispheres, the United Airlines magazine. Although the word kabaddi is used for the chant in most of the world, Hargreaves wrote, "in Nepal this is 'Do-Do,' in Sri Lanka 'Guddo,' in Malaysia 'Chaddo-Guddo,' and in Indonesia 'Techib.'" Imagine appearing before the Olympic committee to argue acceptance for a game...
