Western diplomats in Africa speculated that the raid was aimed at driving a wedge between Mugabe, who has insisted that the war will continue until Muzorewa steps down, and his uneasy partner Nkomo, who seems more willing to compromise with the bishop's regime. While attempting to split his external enemies, the Prime Minister has dealt sternly with his political opponents inside the country. In July, Zimbabwe Rhodesian soldiers shot down at least 183 members of the "private army" of Muzorewa's rival, the Rev. ...German dive bombers off Crete. "Abandon ship or I'm going to sink you!" his admiral signaled when he refused to leave his bridge at one time. "Try it and I'll bloody well sink you!" Mountbatten replied. Mountbatten's later direction of the disastrous commando raid on Dieppe also contributed to a growing reputation for recklessness. Cohn, onetime aide to Senator Joseph McCarthy, said last week that in preparing for the trial Rubell told him that the discotheque's many famous visitors included Jordan and Powell...

...fastidiously designed compound looks as tame as a set in an oldtime jungle horror movie. His murder, which is archly intercut with the ritual slaughter of a carabao, is the film's only poorly shot death scene. Apocalypse Now's much talked-about discarded ending - another air raid - would not have illuminated this murk...
