...LAST STEAM RAILROAD IN AMERICA Photographs by O. Winston Link; text by Thomas H. Garver (Abrams; $49.50). If you were in the driver's seat, it was the embodiment of Manifest Destiny. If you were in its way, as were the tribes of the Great Plains, it was the iron horse, snorting emissary of the unstoppable paleface invasion. Today the sooty beast is the stuff of nostalgia. This is a book of homage to those vanished symbols of expansion and industrial might. The evocative old images recall a time when belching smoke and slashing rail lines were signs of progress...
Commuters in France faced traffic jams and long lines Monday morning as a strike by national railroad employees reached its fourth day. The strike is the latest in a number of protests by millions of French public service workers who are angry at proposed job and benefit cutbacks. Bruce Crumley reports from Paris: "Polls show that about 54 percent of the French basically support the strikes. I guess they think that creating absolute havoc is justified. In downtown Phoenix, authorities foiled two men who may have been up to no good with a railroad device called a derailer. National attention focused more on notices recently posted by Amtrak announcing its intention to end direct service...
...needs a showplace, and now Reno has bowling's. It remains an open question, according to Eadington, whether the extra business drawn by the facility will be enough to keep the North Nevada gaming industry healthy and growing over time. Reno is still the kind of city where the railroad tracks run right through the middle of downtown, no matter how many welcome bowlers go up outside the Reno Turf Club. But for Pearson on a recent Saturday, what he sees as he looks down on the 18th annual Reno Nisei Invitational is good news enough: 80 clean, well...
