...private session with journalists last week, French President Francois Mitterrand described it as "criminal and absurd . . . and stupid." Indeed, whoever blew up and sank the Rainbow Warrior, flagship of the Greenpeace environmental organization, in New Zealand's Auckland harbor last July did not do France or its President any favor. As the usually pro-Mitterrand Paris daily Le Monde and other papers zeroed in on the culpability of the government in the mysterious act of sabotage, the President could no longer remain aloof from what was rapidly becoming one of France's worst political crises in the four years since...
...weeks the French press has steadily stripped away the credibility of the government, which had firmly denied any responsibility for the attack on the Rainbow Warrior, in which a Greenpeace photographer lost his life. In its first hasty search for culprits, the government had appointed as special investigator Bernard Tricot, a respected former chief of staff for President Charles de Gaulle. Tricot's report, completed in 17 days, revealed only a murky picture of French spies trying to learn about Greenpeace's plans for a floating protest against France's nuclear tests on the Pacific atoll of Mururoa this autumn...
...adversity struck and we didn't handle it. The offense lost sync and coordination, which is what we obviously wanted to keep away from. The disaster we had at Brown last week, when we got smashed 35-0 [in a preseason scrimmage], the first half was like a golden rainbow. It was just super for us. And I just felt we should have built on that and really done a really great job. Believe me, we had the top echelon football team dead and buried at halftime...we rendered a great quarterback to a very, very ineffective person. We took...
Nearly everybody, including Grimm, agrees that raising the entire Titanic would be both technologically and financially unthinkable. Yet at least one salvage expert may be ready to give it a try. He is Britain's John Pierce, who designed an array of inflatable canvas bags to lift the Rainbow Warrior from the bottom of Auckland harbor in New Zealand after it had been sunk by a terrorist bomb. According to accounts in the British press, Pierce has suggested a similar approach for the Titanic. But raising the 418-ton Greenpeace ship from a shallow harbor is one thing, rescuing...
Seven French agents had been sent to keep the Rainbow Warrior under surveillance before it set out on its protest mission, the report said. Two of them, Dominique Prieur and Alain Mafart, are being held in custody in New Zealand on charges of murder and arson. Three other agents, all men, were identified by the report as crew members of the Ouvea, a chartered yacht spotted in New Zealand waters shortly before the explosion. The fact that Mafart and the Ouvea crew members were all experts in underwater demolition raised new suspicions. Alain Madelin, a rightist member of the French...
