Maui, with its rain forests and high volcanic range, boasts some 1,300 of the higher plants that exist only in the Hawaiian Islands. Indigenous birds include the black-necked stilt, the claw-footed nene, the short-eared owl and the blue-faced booby, and there are such unique fauna as the monk seal, the hoary bat and the predacious caterpillar. (There are no snakes on the islands.) Maui's waters teem with more than 700 species of fish, perhaps 20% of which are to be found only in Hawaii. The island's most faithful visitor...
...classic American musical comedy: dialogue, plot, song and dance blend seamlessly to create a juggernaut of excitement. Though every cut and camera angle in Hair appears to have been carefully conceived, the total effect is spontaneous. Like the best movie musicals of the '50s (Singin' in the Rain) and the '60s (A Hard Day's Night), Hair leaps from one number to the next. Soon the audience is leaping...
...Stop the Rain? Ignore the sappy title; Paramount didn't have the guts to release it under "Dog Soldiers." But here it is, adapted by author Robert Stone from his award-winning novel--a horrifying movie that graphically portrays Stone's peculiar vision of America in the early '70s. Alexandr Solzhenyitsen aside, it is a curiously amoral world, careening along on its own hellish trip, where the good guys and the bad guys become indistinguishable. Where the last vision of sanity is of ubermensch Ray Hicks (stunningly portrayed by Nick Nolte) slamming a clip into his M-16 and proclaiming...
...disturbing, scary movie, and most viewers, especially women, are turned off by Nolte's super-masculine individualism. In truth, Who'll Stop the Rain? only scratches the surface of these sordid time. But it makes the effort, matched only in this strangely apolitical decade by Chinatown. I admire that, and maybe you will too; Paramount put no money into promotion and it opened and closed most places last August in a week. If you can, watch the reaction of the Cambridge audience, as Moriarty and Weld (people very much like your normal Cambridge intellectual) are forced to rely...
...largesse was just a trifle embarrassing since the Queen got a little bit better than she gave. Her official gifts to her hosts in Kuwait, Bah rain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman were sterling silver salvers engraved with a picture of the royal yacht Britannia. The Guardian estimated that the salvers probably cost between $4,000 and $6,000 apiece, adding somewhat cattily that Britain's "balance of payments on the transaction looks extremely healthy." Still, as the paper observed, "it's the thought that counts...
