...northerly climes, scientists know little more about the monsoon than did the old Arab traders who named the awesome wind mausam, or season. In fact there are not one but two monsoons every year. Rolling off the tropical seas from the southwest, the sodden summer winds unleash torrential rains that give life to crops across India-and take human lives as swollen rivers flood towns (this year's toll: at least 900 dead, 3 million homeless). Reversing themselves after an autumn lull, the winds return, this time from the northeast, carrying cool, relatively dry air. Building to gale force...
Space officials cannot tell precisely when the "random reentry" (as NASA jargon has it) will occur. Best estimate: some time between mid-1979 and mid-1980. They do know that most of the space station will burn up in the atmosphere. But about one-third of the station will rain down in a shower of some 500 fragments along a track up to 6,440 km (4,000 miles) long and 160 km (100 miles) wide. Its location: somewhere in a broad, globe-girdling belt as far north as Newfoundland and as far south as the tip of South America...
Flops and near flops, for the most part, were not thoughtful and highfalutin, but many of them tried to be. Who'll Stop the Rain, which wanted to say something about the drug culture, opened in August and died in the marketplace within two months. Audiences also wisely avoided Sylvester Stallone's F.I.S.T., a tedious fictionalization of the life of Jimmy Hoffa, and were almost as wary of Paradise Alley, Stallone's futile attempt to re-create sweaty 1940s realism. Convoy, Ali MacGraw's comeback vehicle, did not get rolling, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely...
Italian Director Lina Wertmuller's first English-language picture went by a title so long that some moviegoers could not finish lip reading it: The End of the World in Our Usual Bed in a Night Full of Rain. It also suffered from an insurmountable problem: for the first time American audiences could understand what Wertmuller was saying. Warner Bros., which had plans to finance two other Wertmuller pictures, quietly changed its mind and gave her a map of Rome. One of the few movies able to quell the mind-numbing trend was Paul Mazursky's marvelous...
Professor Cassidy surely didn't venture south of the Mason-Dixon when he checked various parts of the U.S. for "heavy rain." Every Southerner knows it's a trash-movin' gully washer...
