Died. Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, 94, India's elder statesman and a principal lieutenant of Mohandas Gandhi during their country's struggle for independence; in Madras, India. A Brahman lawyer who joined Gandhi in 1919, "Rajaji" served his mentor as publisher and administrative aide. His leadership in passive resistance against the British led to frequent jail terms.
