With a cast including Jimmy Durante, Marjorie Rambeau, Lupe Velez and Mary Carlisle, one would expect "Palooka" to be a good picture, unfortunately, these experienced players are incapable of dragging it above the drippy level to which one of the most stupid stories on record reduces it. Just why on earth such an array of talent must be so thoroughly wasted certainly passes understanding...

...ability. When she is in front of the camera she creates a convincing, unforgettable atmosphere of the exotic with her gestures, her small, sad face, the deep tones of her voice. She brings to life the conventional scenes, so stiffly and even stodgily written. Robert Montgomery and Marjorie Rambeau seem indifferent in their roles, their competence too heavily overshadowed by Garbo's brilliance. Best sequence: Garbo reunited with her lover when he finds her penniless in a little cafe...
