Romney sees no need to join with any other company, since he has a top management staff and such a low break-even point that he can make far more per compact than the Big Three, whose invasion of the market has not hurt him. Rambler sales have risen from 6.3% of total industry sales just before the advent of Falcon, Corvair and Valiant to 7.1% today -and are still climbing. AMERICAN MOTORS will bring out a Rambler with an engine having an aluminum block for its bestselling model, the 108-in. Rambler. The new block is 50% lighter than a conventional cast-iron block, and by cutting down weight is expected to improve gas mileage. American Motors also has a new muffler, which it says will not have to be replaced, as in most present cars. Coated with ceramic, it should last for 90,000 miles of driving, says American Motors...

...TIME Correspondent William Weber Johnson tells it in a biography called Kelly Blue, published last week (Doubleday; $3.95.), Kelly was a rambler, a restless fiddlefoot who never stopped traveling until he was too old to roam. The son of a blacksmith of Irish descent, he was born in Ohio, lived in Iowa, Michigan and Pennsylvania before he was 16, and wandered West from New Jersey. As he himself admitted, he was always "too quick to take a notion and too quick to get charmed up" about somewhere else...
