...CSIs are the most beautifully composed series on the networks. Each has its own color palette--neon for the original, set in Vegas; warm and tropical for Miami; metallic for New York--like the packaging for different flavors of chips (think of them as Original, Spicy Fiesta and Cool Ranch). And the special effects, which make the camera seem to zoom through blood vessels or the fiery barrel of a gun--render the forensic science more real than any dry technical explanation. The overexposed flashback images look like music videos, the lurid anatomical closeups like art film, the lab scenes...
...improvised from an outline, Sykes tries out a different job every episode, apparently unhappy with the 50 she already holds. And since Sykes is extremely curious about what society deems unacceptable and in particular how to use those things to get herself more attention, she flew to the Chicken Ranch, the legal brothel in Pahrump, Nev., that was the basis for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (whorehouses, unsurprisingly, sometimes have to flee the state). Since this is another form of promotion, Sykes briefly considers it in the limo ride back to the Mandalay Bay. Finally, she sighs and says, "I can't run for office with my picture on the Chicken Ranch website." The woman really is planning to do every job in the country...
Back in Bush’s B-School days, the now defunct Hillbilly Ranch lounge and bar served as Bush’s home away from home. Located near what is now the Park Plaza Hotel, the restaurant specialized in honky tonk with hybrid blends of country, blues and gospel music. When he wasn’t hitting the books, Bush was often seen partying heartily at the Hillbilly Ranch with his cohorts, presumably over a few Sam Adams...
