With the exit of this year's seniors and the ascent of the first years from the Yard to the houses, Harvard's residential system will become fully randomized for the first time in the history of the College. When the class of '98 leaves these hallowed homes, very few remaining students will have a personal memory of a time when the houses were chosen--even of the non-ordered, somewhat random variety of choice...
...script is schizophrenic. While Macaulay's book is known for its intensive character studies of Nina and George, Wendy Wasserstein's script idles with the addition of random, irrelevant characters. Alan Alda and Allison Janey appear in small supporting roles to fit the screen with comic relief whenever the cheese becomes unbearable. Nigel Hawthorne, a Hytner mainstay, is thrown into the movie for no apparent reason (other than to give a tedious monologue where he works in the title of the movie.) Even worse, the script is unsure of itself-the declarations of love between various sets of characters...
...Michael Moore is a floor sample of what we all could be," notes a Random House press official in Michael Moore's new documentary film, The Big One. Well, luckily, it's only a floor sample. A far cry from Moore's well-crafted, pro-labor bullseye, Roger & Me, The Big One's camera seems to be more interested in Michael than in socio-economic reportage (and is unfortunately almost as annoying as those Clinique salespeople at Saks). Of course, The Big One is not a commercial, it's a sermon, and it might be quite effective for some people...
Unsettlingly random in its own right, the blue streak of experience and memory that runs across the pages of this book is made downright disturbing by Harlan's refusal to anchor its happenings in the framework of an established hierarchy of truth and reality. In The Healing, bearded ladies and unicorn girls are endowed with as much credence as the subjects of her husband's anthropological research and Paul Simon's lyrics are as respectable a system for understanding the world as the logic Harlan learns at night school...
...future works, she will probably be able to cross the line between poetry and prose more gracefully. The Priest Fainted, for all its touching themes about the role mothers, daughters and women in general play in life--the book says next to nothing, and whose title is as random and empty as the novel itself...
