Besides Soprano Pons and a competent though none too handsome tenor, French-Canadian Raoul Jobin, The Daughter of the Regiment boasts, in the role of Sergeant Sulpice who foster-fathers Marie, a notable new singer, Italian Basso Buffo Salvatore Baccaloni. The Met's production ends with everyone singing La Marseillaise*-an idea contributed by Mme. Pons's band-leading husband, Andre ("Kosty") Kostelanetz...

...Panama locale, lusciously tinted by Designer Raoul Pène du Bois, who has also clothed a luscious chorus line in just the right places, gives Cole Porter a chance to indulge his talent for Latin-American rhythms (previous examples: Begin the Beguine, I Get A Kick Out of You}. The Porterian lyric wit is displayed in a trio and quintet titled, respectively, God Bless the Women and You Said It. The tune that seems likely to prove most durable is Panama Hattie's response, in rumba rhythm, to temporary disappointment in love: "Make it another oldfashioned, please...

Costuming and scenery are done in the best Panamanian manner by Raoul DuBois, and the book of Fields and DeSylva is good musical comedy stock. Added up, this should be the proper formula for another Broadway hit, but in its embryonic stages the show does not yet live up to its promise. "Panama Hattie" still gives the impression of dragging, so that...

...from 96% of theoretical capacity to 100%, spryer, smaller Bethlehem Steel actually had to refuse some commercial orders in order to rush steel to the Navy. Many a specialty producer's unfilled orders continued to pile up. One such was little Crucible Steel. Its canny, portly president, Raoul Desvernine, who in last October's phony boom warned businessmen "not to get ahead of the war," urged President Roosevelt to confer "broader" (crackdown) powers on Commissioners Knudsen and Stettinius...
