...Whether making a rap out of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, belting out a song about red shoes in Swedish, or fashioning an ode to dinosaur puke, the Redundant Steaks struggle to come up with songs appropriate for their titles. In reference to the two songs entitled "Missing Buddha" (one Angry, one Dyslexic), Vaux warns: "We couldn't come up with lyrics for that random title, so we just did some Indian improv... I wouldn't bother listening to those; they're very painful and long...
...skateboarding section, German punks roll to American rap, ranging from tame FM staples to gansta rap standards. When I first arrived, I was treated to Public Enemy's "He Got Game," a likable tune, at least in the version played over American radio. Funny thing, though: In Germany they play the unedited versions, replete with curse words and sexual imagery unfit for a teen hangout, and passing strange at a children's amusement park. But, of course, they don't understand the words--one American's obscenity is, apparently, another German's lyric...
...steps outside. He says, "Hey," and waves. To be recognized by a jock like Bobby is a big deal to the kid, who beams. It is part of Bobby's charm. It brings him fame. Bobby climbs into a friend's Oldsmobile, with a large speaker blaring rap music in the backseat. They're going to a drive-in for chili dogs and draft root beer. ...record company rant from Juxtapose, went on for over ten minutes, much of which was Tricky chanting "You watch too many films/Films are for real" in his distinctive rasp and improvising lyrics. "You," in which he repeated the line "tear out my eyes," was performed in a similar style. Rap covers "Bad Dream" and "The Moment I Feared" were performed at breakneck speed by the female vocalist. "Tricky Kid" was as menacing as ever. Amidst all this cacaphony was the peace and beauty of "Christiansands" and the piano blues of "Makes Me Wanna...
...show proved, Tricky's perhaps at his best when he's reinterpreting songs. But Tricky's a somewhat difficult figure to embrace whole-heartedly. While he's to be admired for criticizing the motives of record companies (for commodifying violence through gangsta rap), that hasn't stopped him from producing his own music endorsing violence and the gangsta lifestyle. And more often than he criticizes the politics of record companies, he's criticizing the salary they pay him. More problematic is the subtext of misogyny that permeates his work. While it was minimized in the wake of Maxinquaye, it makes...
