...would like to address a review in The Crimson from Monday, May 6, by Peter A. Hahn. I do not pretend to call myself an expert in the form of music we have come to call rap; but I do enjoy listening. And what I witnessed on Saturday last was not the type of "mediocre" and "pedestrian" performance as Mr. Hahn claims it was. ...their idols (the Brit pop group Oasis, often accused of ripping off the Beatles, offers up a stale cover of I Am the Walrus on the single for its song Wonderwall) or perform out-of-character material (Bone Thugs-N-Harmony sweetly sing one of its hard-core rap songs on its single Tha Crossroads). Natalie Merchant, whose enchanting album Tigerlily spawned three successful singles, says "songs should have a second life." She returned to the studio to rerecord her song Jealousy before releasing it as a single...

...When rap came around, however, younger performers found its passionate, insistent rhythms a more fitting vehicle for the messages they wanted to deliver and for presenting the truth of their lives. Groups like Public Enemy carried the flag of black protest, and later, gangsta rappers like Snoop Doggy Dogg chronicled the crime-ridden neighborhoods in which they lived in scathing, scatological terms. Soul music was left to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men and the like. Talented performers, yes. Standard-bearers for musical boundary pushing...

Reminiscent of the opening bands, the singers broke into freestyle rap, energizing the monotonous songs. Some people from the audience, who were more excited than others, joined the Pharcyde on stage and rapped along, showing that the crowd could be excited despite the band's uninventiveness...
