...year or so from now, skywriting airplanes fill the heavens over the U.S. with "Buy Nutsies" in mile-high letters of long-lasting, bright-colored smoke, the credit (such as it is) will go to Betty Lou Raskin. 36, a research associate at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University. This week, at a Washington, D.C.. meeting of the American Society of Plastic Engineers, Miss Raskin unveiled the skywriters' dream weapon: "holey smoke" particles which are made of foam plastic and are so gossamer light that they hardly fall...
Most artificial smokes, Miss Raskin explained, are made of fairly heavy materials such as phosphorus pentoxide or petroleum oils. Even if their particles are only one micron (one twenty-five thousandth of an inch) in diameter, they fall through air at about eight inches per hour, which she considers too fast. Backed by the Air Force, Miss Raskin discovered a way to fluff various kinds of plastic into spherical particles that are mostly empty cells and almost as light as air. Miss Raskin's particles can be colored, and they fall 1,250 times slower than solid smoke particles...
...departure as an omen of the day when "Deseret too will go out into the great world . . ." Composer Kastle provided a surgingly lyrical score admirably suited to the moods of the text. One of its high points was a rhapsodic duet between the heroine, expertly portrayed by Soprano Judith Raskin, and the officer ("No rival heart/ No rival wife/ Will come/ Between our flesh/ Our love"). Other standouts: a triumphant final sextet celebrating the "lesson of love," and the heroine's sprightly address to a mirror to variations of Come, Come, Ye Saints. The opera's weakness...
...Bass Cesare Siepi was superb as the don, his voice smooth and resonant, his acting a marvel of revealing, reflex-quick responses to the camera's eye. In one of the opera's musical high points, the Act I love duet of Giovanni and Zerlina (Soprano Judith Raskin), Siepi gave his mahogany tones a range of inflections-ardor, indignation, surprise-that told the viewer in the twist of a phrase everything about the don he needed to know. Less effective than Siepi dramatically, Negro Soprano Leontyne Price sang the role of Donna Anna in a richly textured voice...
Last spring, when Kennedy became an open candidate, he and Sorenson began to select the best advocates in each state, and the advance men-O'Brien, O'Donnell, Wallace, and Bob and Ted Kennedy -took to the road to recruit the local organizations. Based in Chicago, Raskin carried the Kennedy argument from Ohio to Oregon. At the time of the Hyannis Port meeting, there was a trusted lieutenant in every state, and the beginnings of a full-fledged organization in all of the key primary states-Wisconsin, Oregon, West Virginia, Nebraska, Indiana and New Hampshire...
