...David Merrill as Ophelia Heartbeat is a knockout. The rest of the cast works well, too. But an extension of this paragraph must go to Japes Emerson, who plays Cardinal Cynne. Leering with the shifty paranoia of a male Jane Curtin, Emerson moves, under his clerical robes and Rasputin beard, with a pneumatic grace and, except for a deficient malevolent laugh, his voice is the silky articulator of a deft cartoon of nastiness. When, after Emerson and Levi's "Living in Sin" number Mr. First Nighter lets loose his battle cry ("Ex-cellent!), there is no dissent here or anywhere...

Lysenko moved with Rasputin-like skill. Inviting critics to come forth at an "open" scientific meeting in 1948. he trapped them into confessing their adherence to the old "Mendel-Morgan" genetic heresies and, with Stalin's approval, replaced them with his cronies. As Director of the Genetics Institute of the Academy of Sciences, Lysenko banned all experiments in traditional genetics; even the fruit flies used in this work were destroyed by boiling...

The trouble with doing Forum is that the shadow of Zero Mostel looms over this central part like a chicken hawk over the barnyard, ready to swoop down on young actors. Zax stacks up--he won't make anybody forget Mostel, but he will make...

...brittle, fragile woman, she isolated herself, governing through a small clique of inept and often corrupt advisers. Among them was Astrologer-Mystic José López Rega, a kind of Pampas Rasputin whose power antagonized the military and whose conservative economic ideas upset labor. After popular demonstrations forced López Rega to quit last July, Isabel became a near recluse. At her infrequent public appearances, she was visibly nervous, often tearful and sometimes nearly hysterical. Last fall, claiming failing health, she took a leave to retreat to the hills of Córdoba to regain her strength. Many...

...historic Apollo-Soyuz handshake in space constitutes a dramatic repudiation of Alexander Solzhenitsyn's unmistakable efforts to sow hatred in the hearts of Americans. In a Rasputin-like manner, he unmasked himself when he implied that America should have fought against the Russians instead of with them against the Nazis...
