...recess as a period of relaxation from our duties, and a time of social enjoyment at home. As we are about to leave we cannot help but think of the heroic conduct and self-denial of those men on the various athletic teams who remain in training at Cambridge rather than invalidate whatever chances they may have of excelling in their respective branches. That the University is deeply grateful for the sacrifices they make, it is unnecessary to state; and the fellows who remain, whether on the crews, base-ball nine or lacrosse team, should be aware that their efforts...
...about $900, reducing especially sundries by $100, clothing by $75, and board by $30, besides many of the smaller items. The four upper grades may be left approximately as they stand. For books and stationery the estimates in these as well as in teh other columns are perhaps rather low, but there is considerable variation in this respect in the needs of different courses and branches of study...
...each class," but asserts near the end that of this grade "there are not six in a class," and of the next only "about ten." The conclusions which he draws are in reality correct, but are not such as most people would draw from the figures presented, but rather the contrary. Professor Palmer showed clearly and on very good evidence that life at Harvard is not unreasonably expensive, and substantially confirmed the estimates in the catalogue. The tables in "College Expenses" are based upon in sufficient information, are faulty in detail, and upon the whole give the impression that there...
...minimum of expenses. The figures given by Mr. Leighton are too large, because they include some expenses which a really economical man would never incur, while the estimates of others are inconsistently large. For similar reasons, the totals in the medium grades are not low enough. It is rather surprising to find the term "modest" attached to a grade in which the estimated expense is $1,225. It appears to us that for the vast majority of college men, the 'modest" limit is much below this. Taking the discussion as it now stands, we fail to see that the statements...
...editorial of Saturday's issue was unmistakeable. We quote a few lines: "As a whole the meetings this year have not been up to the standard of former years; not, we think, because of any negligence on the part of the students of the Athletic Association, but rather because of the lack of interest of men in college. The efforts made by the Athletic Association to arouse interest in the weekly contests they arranged, met with feeble responce and were abandoned. It is this lack of interest that has made the meetings this year inferior to those of former years...
