...bitterest grudges, the most grinding poverty, the strongest loves were forgotten last week. Poles are phlegmatic. Poland's suicide rate, the lowest in Europe, is nine per 100,000 compared with 13 in Britain, 29 in Germany. As last week wore on, as the nerves of the rest of the world unraveled like rope-ends, only one complaint was to be heard in Poland: What are they waiting for? ...Federal Reserve announced that it would lend on Governments at par, not only to member banks but to any U. S. bank, at the member bank rate (1% in New York, 1% elsewhere). Meantime, the Federal Reserve bought Governments on the New York Stock Exchange. It did such a rushing business that the Exchange allowed trading in Governments to continue 25 minutes after closing time. ...been playing classical music to crowds of around 1,500 a day, was replaced by swing band leaders, notably Benny Goodman whose hot band played to 2,000,000 customers in five weeks. The Fair's admissions jumped, by last week were averaging 37,600 daily. At this rate by its closing date, December 2, it would have 12,000,000 customers, 40% fewer than originally expected, 13% fewer than San Francisco's 1915 exposition. But at this rate it is netting a good operating profit instead of barely meeting expenses...
