...Davis, a rare blow-dried Republican in liberal Los Angeles, has played this card before. He first made his mark on the national scene by producing a 10-minute movie for 2002 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Sonny Purdue that depicted the sitting governor, Roy Barnes, as "King Roy," a giant rat with a gold crown, stomping like Godzilla through Atlanta. That was before the advent of YouTube and viral videos, so he screened the film for journalists at a movie theater; the next day, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran an image from the spot on its front page. ...ultimate icon of man, and ever since I bought it last term, we spend hours each week playing it, sitting together amidst the pastiche of filth and tactfully un-disposed beer cans that is our common room, more satisfied with our masculinity than a preening gym rat. Which is to say, in other words, just sort...
...claims to have been lucky once, came to this unlucky point, a problematic storytelling tactic if you've cast Buscemi in the lead. We completely expect him to be a semi-hysterical mess standing under the unflattering glow of fluorescent lights. He cooks himself a meal - fillet of feline - and feeds a morsel of it to a stray rat. Back on the road, he is set upon by four highwaymen. Out comes his sword, and in an instant, they are decapitated, eviscerated, kaput. Later he sees another gang abusing a woman but doesn't intervene. "Stay on the path," he tells himself. He is the superman as loner, able to survive...
...thankfully there has also been wonderful preservation. Last year, Palm Springs' Riviera Hotel, psriviera.com, once the retreat of Sinatra's Rat Pack and other stars, reopened after a stunning multimillion-dollar renovation. The Ace Hotel, acehotel.com, an energetically revamped motel, also reopened in 2009 and has become one of Palm Springs' trendier hangouts. If chilling out by its poolside on Sunday afternoons to the sounds of a DJ counts as architectural tourism, you can be sure the pastime will have plenty of takers...
