General Sadao Araki is Japan's champion sabre-rattler and No. 1 Militarist, but Japanese like to point out in his favor that he is personally frail-looking, mild-mannered, small, ascetic, "a mystic." Araki himself reconciles these contradictions in his character with his favorite maxim, "Be greedy only in mind." To keep fit he put in 20 minutes a day bastinadoing a dummy with a bamboo sword, until influenza laid him low last winter and politicians forced his resignation as War Minister. He has never been bitten. Last week Roy Dickson, 11, fondled a Western Ring snake, rarest of his collection, planned to go after a rattler next...
...Couple Who Kept the Baby With the Rattlesnake. This is not the exact story. Then she put him in a cage with Kitty, a female rattler. Last fortnight appeared the results of Curator Wiley's kind treatment-ten baby...
Your article, "Snakes & Rain" of issue Sept. 5 is indeed interesting, especially the last part of the story on p. 26 which deals with the Hopi Indians and rattlesnakes. From my experience with the great Florida diamondback rattler, timber or mountain rattlesnake, as well as with the Seminole Indians with whom I hunt, no person, white or Indian, is immune if a large rattler, with its venom sacs filled, injects this poison through its hollow fangs into your body. Personally, I do not believe the Hopi Indians are immune or have an antidote which can be successfully used after...
