...Friday night, we were lucky enough to catch the first-ever New Orleans Halloween Parade, which was amazing - as raucous, titillating and over the top as you might imagine - but it was hard to feel sexy while covered in greasepaint, and then in hives from the reaction to the greasepaint. (Note to self: next year, spring for naughty nurse outfit). The following night, however, upped our heat quotient significantly. We went to an old-timey club called One-Eyed Jacks (615 Toulouse Street; 504-569-8361) and saw a brilliant, theatrical band called Rock City Morgue and watched the beautiful...

...raucous midnight rally at the University of Miami this week, DiBenigno notes, some 8,000 people turned out, and many were young Cuban Americans, "dancing and swaying to the same music their parents and grandparents listen to" as well as sharing the same political concerns. That includes, she argues, their ardent opposition to any kind of dialogue with the Castros, which Obama might be more open to. "And don't forget what 'redistribution of wealth' means to Cuban Americans," DiBenigno adds. "It means the kind of policies that came to power in Cuba in 1959. That...

The days of universities as hotbeds of political dissent are over - in New Zealand, at least. Generally speaking, the main concerns of today's students are drinking and study - in that order, says Hempseed: "It feels like we're missing out on something." The 23-year-old will be voting Labour for two reasons. One, the economy will need special...

...Still, McCain's peninsular campaign seemed to be gelling at his raucous rally on the Florida International University campus. Crist was on hand, telling the crowd that "this is giddyap time" and insisting McCain "is a guy who knows how to close a fight strong! Never count out John McCain!" More important, McCain himself set aside the ideological invective and zoomed in on Florida's bust. "Obama's associations with terrorists are important," says Longobarde, the antiques dealer, "but McCain needs to be talking about the economy and our housing collapse." She was gratified when McCain dived into his plan...

...Anyway, I (flawlessly, might I add) recited my lines in front of the Ivory Tower execs and a daunting video camera. Despite my laudable delivery, they did ask for one additional take that would be “more confident.” And confidence is what I brought. Raucous applause, or something like it, ensued and I bashfully exited to sketchy Garden Street and its normal group of ruffians. Alas, the final memo I didn’t receive concerned callbacks. Apparently, they were posted Friday night and the callbacks themselves were held Saturday afternoon. My bad. When...
