Trials of Nazi suspects have slowed to a trickle in Germany: eyewitness testimony is harder to come by nearly 57 years after the war ended, and the accused are dying out. Last year there were two trials, both involving very elderly men. A court in Ravensburg in southern Germany sentenced former SS officer Julius Viel, then 83, to 12 years in prison for shooting dead seven Jews as they dug trenches at the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. ...particularly ebullient moment, De Gaulle rose with a toast to "the friendship that our two peoples have sealed, guided by reason and emotion alike." Then a messenger arrived from the Quai d'Orsay, bearing an urgent news dispatch for Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville. Other injections destroyed the hearing nerve in one ear. Then the Nazis injected typhus into her blood to make serum. In the typhus block they did not bother to feed prisoners. The countess' last memory of Ravensburg was of feebly trying to fend off a ravenous woman prisoner turned cannibal. Two days later Yvonne awoke...
