...sample the life of homeless people. In jeans and baseball cap, she watched a series of drug deals go down. She spent a second night among more vagrants at a skid row mission. Throughout most of her 48 hours on the streets, she went unrecognized -- until Sister Raymonda, a nun who has known the mayor for years, spotted her resting on a bench reading the paper and whispered, "If you want to conceal your identity, you should remember that homeless women don't read the financial pages...

Also in the repertory were a fussy Raymonda and Le Palais de Cristal, the original version of a George Balanchine masterpiece, set to Bizet, known in the U.S. as Symphony in C. In these, the company showed off some fine dancing, with the Balanchine memorable for the four ballerinas' poignant Gallic flair. At other times, the dancers seemed distant from the music, preoccupied with steps and counts. They could use some better programs. Darci took on her first major parts in Europe last summer while the company was on tour. In the current New York season, she appears in Bizet's Symphony in C, Raymonda Variations, Valse Fantaisie, Walpurgisnacht and Tchaikovsky Suite No. 3. Of these, the lyrical adagio in the Bizet is the most difficult, demanding regal presence and an enigmatic, almost witchy sexiness. But Darci is a very young princess, and the other quality is still beyond her. Nor did it help when, on the second night, a bodice seam split down to the waist. Darci went right on with...

A.B.T. has top stars (Natalia Makarova, Cynthia Gregory, Gelsey Kirkland, Anthony Dowell, Fernando Bujones and Baryshnikov, who will also dance). But its stagings of Swan Lake and Giselle show their age, and newer productions like Sleeping Beauty and Raymonda have been artistic disappointments. As the management has grown older, young dancers have been left without guidance, to develop or languish on their...
