...like the gruleings four-floor climb to your section in the Fogg. Feel proud of yourself as you learn to use the left staircase at the Sackler to avoid the normal pedestrian traffic as the guards check everyone’s bag for stolen purse-sized materpieces. (Airline x-ray scanners and bag searchers suddenly seem like a breeze.) And your knowledge of the museums will pay off big time when Aunt Doris comes to visit and you need some place to hold her attention for a day. Whether you are a concentrator or not, you should familiarize yourself with...

Professors Robert Lue and Ray Erickson comprise the Jekyll and Hyde tag-team that teaches BS 54 (a.k.a. MCB 54) and clearly shows the pitfalls of a team-taught course. Watch Lue as he describes the actin kinetics behind "dicty" movement (you wouldn't think that nausea and laughter could be experienced together), Lue also likes to show off his tech savvy with animations that are pretty cool to the science nerds that populate the course. He even modifies the trailers of popular movies into short clips about BS 54—but watch out, that grin he wears during...

...patient Bob has a "bone-on-bone" knee - no cartilage at all between his femur (thigh bone) and his tibia (leg bone). Common arthritis looks white on an on X-ray; Bob's X-ray is a snowstorm. He's as bow-legged as a cowboy, the inside of his bones have ground each other down. Although his cartilage is all gone, there's something even more important missing in his case. He has no pain. Bob, 70, actually comes in this time because he has pulled a muscle. When I examine him, I'm careful...

...What a contrast to my next patient. Sean is half Bob's age. He weighs less, isn't as active, and has nice straight legs. Barely a trace of arthritis on X-ray and nothing except "minimal arthritic changes" on his MRI. He has taken Advil, Naprosyn, Voltaren, Celebrex with minimal help. Injections into his knees of hyaluronic acid (a component of joint fluid) and corticosteroids provided only a few weeks of relief. Physical therapy, braces, acupuncture, yoga all failed. He couldn't get out of chairs, couldn't climb stairs because of the pain. There was one thing left...

...morning, at 11am Australian time, things finally came unglued for the 44-year-old as he was shooting a documentary segment on stingrays. Snorkeling on Batt Reef , a stretch of the Great Barrier Reef about 15km from Port Douglas in North Queensland, Irwin happened to swim over a large ray which, startled, whipped its barbed tail upwards into his chest. He died instantly. Veteran marine wildlife documentary maker Ben Cropp, who has spent hundreds of hours filming on Batt Reef, says Irwin had come too close to a bull ray. Citing a colleague who saw footage of the attack, Cropp...
