...Girls. First of all, they're women, not girls, and they are anything but bubble-gum pop vixens. Aside from their aforementioned bare-it-all costumes, the flygirls plan on doing the scene where Jesus comes before Herod in dominatrix-chic, complete with fishnet stockings and rhinestone brassieres (the scene was often treated in previous productions as a cross between a vaudeville soft-shoe and soft-core porn as envisioned by the cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show). In the scene where Jesus is flagellated prior to his crucifixion, the flygirls re-enact what can only be described...

...thespian coming-of-age time, the moment when it happens or it doesn't. An ingenue either aims for Jodie Fosteresque acting glory or is condemned to a Peter Pan-ish purgatory, a high-voiced, short-pants-wearing Urkel-ish hell in which she is damned to re-enact the clumsy tics of adolescence forever...

Nine actors facing the audience in two rows--a kind of oratorio at the Old Bailey--re-enact the legal proceedings and comment on them at the same time, using excerpts from newspaper accounts, biographical works and the memoirs of Wilde and others. It's a dazzling coup de theatre, at once compelling history and chilling human drama...

Most films, as they ravel their stories, narrow their focus to two or three central characters. The English Patient, though, expands its field of vision to embrace the impromptu communities around Almasy--notably Hana and her Sikh lover Kip (Naveen Andrews). They re-enact, with less melodrama, the arc of Almasy and Katharine's desperate affair. Almasy wants his love to flee in a plane; Kip sends Hana soaring on pulleys into the clerestory of the monastery chapel. ...Israel it is customary for confessed murderers to re-enact their crimes, and Amir performed so smoothly that there can be no doubt about what he did and how he did it. What kind of help he had, however, is still unresolved. Security forces keep proclaiming the assassination sprang from a conspiracy, but they have yet to offer hard evidence of the theory. Police and secret-service interrogators have spent days questioning the eight young religious zealots in custody, yet they do not seem to have found proof of an organized network acting on orders from any hierarchy...
