Between each group of pieces, Lawrence-King inserted relevant historical and technical information in his soothing, English-accented voice. He briefly demonstrated the three rows of strings on the double harp (a seeming irony), which encompass all the notes of a piano. He also explained the necessity of reaching through the strings on the outer rows to reach the sharps and flats which lie in the middle row, which made all the more obvious the tremendous skill and agility required to play the harp as beautifully as Lawrence-King does...
...admit, in spite of all that carping, this album put a smile on my face. But it also made me reach for my CD collection and look for the originals. If the bands' aim was exposure, as the addresses of their record companies in the liner notes seems to indicate, a better strategy might have been to distinguish themselves and not parrot the originals--the ready-made market for '80s nostalgia would mean they would have gotten heard anyway. As it stands, however, In Their Eyes comes across as an album trying to ride on the coattails...
Institutions somehow become much more desirable once they are pulled slightly out of reach. Harvard itself thrives on this principle. The University, no less than any other place with high walls and many guards, depends on its inaccessibility to attract candidates for membership. It entices students from all over the world to apply and, with a remarkably high degree of reliability, to get rejected. The University knows it wouldn't have quite so many applicants; the lower the chances of getting in, the more desirable the possibility...
