...very different reaction. When I went on my European trip, I felt that the famous Disney attention to detail justified the price tag of the flawlessly organized tour. Our two professional guides often wore tasteful costumes representing the local cultures, had genuine-looking smiles firmly planted on their faces and acted like perfect nannies: patient, kind and a little magical (not unlike Ms. Poppins herself). At certain points, the itinerary carefully separated the age groups: the adults enjoyed wine-tasting while the kids played dress-up with 18th century garb. Judging from the reaction to the new breast-cancer recommendations, that is proving to be a difficult reality for Americans to accept. But the task force's mammography advice probably marks the leading edge of similar recommendations to come. Already, new guidelines on Pap smear screening for cervical cancer have delayed the age at which young women should begin regular testing and reduced the frequency of testing in older women. Doctors are also questioning the usefulness of prostate-cancer screening among otherwise healthy middle-aged men, as studies begin to show that the test, which has many risks...

Afghanistan is ultimately a very backward country, and as long as it doesn’t become a big base for al Qaeda, it has no real bearing on Europeans’ interests. It is more difficult for an American to speak that truth. We inflate the danger due to the shock of 9/11. We also started the war, so we naturally have a greater stake in seeing it through. ...bracing sense of unity that Obama cited in his peroration was achieved reflexively - it was the obvious human reaction after the Sept. 11 attacks. But such unity is difficult to sustain. And it cannot be reignited by mere words or argument, even when the argument and the policy is, I believe, the correct one. The exquisite rationality that attends almost everything this President does is essential, but not enough, when sending young men and women into battle. There needs to be inspiration as well. There is no such thing as a no-drama...
