While I am opposed to discrimination on any grounds, this latest action by the UC is just another indication that the champions of political correctness have again crossed into the realm of the absurd. I respect the right of individuals to perceive themselves however they please but do not believe that such self-perceptions need form the basis for a minority group that must be explicitly protected. By urging the University to adopt a legal policy towards individuals who wish to transcend their physical characteristics in forming identity, the UC is leading the way into both intellectually and practically convuluted...

...time something acquires a nickname, it may be said to have entered the realm of the normal. "Blood pinning," however, is anything but. Ordinarily, when Marine paratroopers complete 10 training jumps, they receive their golden wings, a pin with two half-inch protruding points on the back. Sometimes, with that military love of macho ritual, the pin is even proudly thumped into a Marine's chest to draw a little celebratory blood. While much of Albright's work will involve economic foreign policymaking such as promoting the advantages of NATO and negotiating new treaties on trade, this is not the realm in which the selection of a woman is so mind-breaking. The point is merely that there is a greater concern over national security, for these issues are most likely to pose a direct threat...

...realm of emotional development that marijuana does its damage. In any case, it seems there has been a mistake. Pot is not the drug of youth but rather of old age, the threshold of death--a little buzz before Kevorkian. It is a dulling drug, certainly useful as a palliative for the elderly. The young don't need to have their pain dulled. They need to learn from it. Perhaps baby-boomer parents, as they grow old, should reserve the world's marijuana supply for themselves and for what will no doubt be the gaudy and self-important theatrics...

...with the shape of her body against the glossy ripples of the ocean. The visual statement of these two dark splotches against her skin is so powerful that it almost overwhelms the knowledge that we are looking at a woman's body. Sometimes the focus on form enters the realm of pure optical illusion. One example is the photograph of the bodies of two men in a desert, overlapping in such a way that they resemble an alien creature...
