...West Bank itself becomes a Palestinian entity. To ease Israel's legitimate fears about the creation of a new Arab realm whose western frontier would be 8.5 miles from Tel Aviv, the Palestinian entity would not possess all the attributes of a sovereign state-at least for a transition period that could last as long as 25 years. It would, however, have its own flag, a parliament and executive and judicial bodies. It could issue passports to all Palestinians living anywhere in the world-an act of enormous symbolic importance to these 3.4 million people without a homeland...

Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors," it used to be thought, took laughter too far, into the realm of farce. ...Sadat was seeking to persuade Israel to drop all preconditions and come to the renewed peace conference that President Carter has been pushing for. If Sadat should succeed in the talks that lie ahead, a negotiated settlement, after 29 years of war and brink of war, is within the realm of hope. If he fails, another war becomes a vivid danger. In the process, Sadat has put on the line his position as leader of the moderate Arabs, and perhaps his life as well. Even before he embarked on his mission, Sadat was being denounced in Libya, Iraq and elsewhere...
